12% of IT professionals in Ukraine work two jobs, — DOU survey
About 12% of Ukrainian IT pros (out of 13,000 surveyed by DOU website) have a side gig — and that number has significantly increased compared to last year.
Overall, 27% of IT professionals have projects on the side of their main job, with 12% having a direct second job, 11.7% working on a pet project, 9% doing IT volunteering or mentoring, and 8.4% working in non-IT fields. Notably, the proportion of those with additional employment has increased in all categories compared to last year.
Interesting tidbit: it’s the seasoned pros — 14% of IT workers with 5+ years of experience (mostly Senior, Head, Tech Lead, and Architect level) who are more likely to look for extra work compared to just 9% with less than 2 years of experience. More experienced professionals also tend to take on more volunteer projects for the Armed Forces.
Designers and UI/UX specialists (33% have additional jobs), security experts (28%), and DevOps, SREs, and sysadmins (23-24%) are the best at juggling multiple jobs, while QA, project management, HR and recruiters, game designers, sales and business development specialists, customer support and Customer Success, and finance professionals rarely take on extra projects (less than 10%).
In the category of pet projects, at least every fifth one brings extra income to IT pros: the share of profitable pet projects among Tech Leads and Architects reaches 40%, and among top tech professionals (CTO/Director/Head of R&D) — 46%. Meanwhile, developers and game designers, who also often have their own projects, are more likely to pursue them for passion — only 15-17% earn income from them.
8% of IT pros dedicate time to work and projects unrelated to IT (last year 7%). 5% in this case directly have jobs with an external focus — most often freelancers (12%), doing part-time on their main job in IT (12%), those who have lost their job in IT (10%), as well as beginners (14% among those with less than a year in IT) and non-technical professionals (12% of marketers and 11% each from sales and Customer Success specialists).
