Over 7mln people employed as wage workers in Kazakhstan
In the fourth quarter of 2024, nearly 9,2 million people were employed in Kazakhstan’s economy, which corresponds to a 65% employment rate among the population aged 15 and older, Kazinform News Agency cites the Bureau of National Statistics.
“In the fourth quarter of 2024, 9,197,000 people were employed across various sectors of the country’s economy, of which 7,047,800 (76.6% of the total workforce) were wage workers, and 2,149,200 (23.4%) were self-employed. The employment rate among the population aged 15 and older was 65%,” the National Statistics Bureau says.
The highest proportion of employed individuals was observed in the following sectors: trade (16,8%), education (13,1%), industry (12,5%), and agriculture (10,6%).
“Compared to the fourth quarter of 2023, overall employment increased by 154,800 people, primarily due to wage workers (up by 141,500 people) and self-employed workers (up by 13,300), the National Statistics Bureau reports.
According to a sample survey results, unemployment rate in Kazakhstan, calculated based on the International Labour Organization’s methodology (those without income-generating activities, actively seeking employment, and willing to start work), was 4.6%.
The share of officially registered unemployed individuals with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection stood at 2.9% of the workforce as of the end of January 2025.
As reported earlier, 995 new workplaces were generated within a week and over 60,000 new jobs would be created in Almaty region in 2025.
